A racial microaggression is a subtle, brief insult, often unintentional, that communicates a hostile or negative message to a person of color. They are pervasive and automatic, delivered in the form of looks, gestures and words and tones, usually unconsciously. Microaggressions have been compared to tiny, but very painful, paper cuts that happen numerous times a day to people of color. Research shows that microaggressions impair functioning and performance by sapping the psychic and spiritual energy of recipients. How can we learn to be more conscious of our behavior and the messages we are sending? Here is an opportunity to reduce the harm we have unknowingly been causing.
